Some bills that are passed into law take effect immediately. Others become effective at a later date.
Today, October 1, is the date that some bills passed over the summer–or even a year or two ago–actually become law. These bills include:
- S.B. 1041 – Extends paid parental leave for North Carolina state employees from eight weeks to twelve weeks.
- S.B. 257 – The Appropriations Act (i.e., state budget) mostly took effect back in July. However, a few sections were delayed until October 1. One was Section 43.10.(a-d), which eliminates physical motor vehicle registration cards and renewal stickers and replaces them with an electronic system. Also taking effect today: Section 5.8.(c), which prevents people from creating and using bots to buy tickets, use multiple IP addresses, and disable virtual queues.
- H.B. 536 – Creates a new North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners to regulate the profession in North Carolina.
