On April 12, 1776, at the meeting of the Fourth Provincial Congress, North Carolina’s assembly authorized its three delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence. To the minutes of that meeting, they added their thoughts on independence and their determination to see it through.

This document became known as the Halifax Resolves. It was the first official action by any of the thirteen colonies on the road to independence from Great Britain.

This Saturday, April 12, 2025, will be the 250th anniversary of the Halifax Resolves. Learn more from these excellent resources.
