{"id":1026,"date":"2025-12-08T15:22:58","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T15:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.ncleg.gov\/houseoversight\/?p=1026"},"modified":"2025-12-08T15:23:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T15:23:19","slug":"chapel-hill-carrboro-city-schools-to-appear-before-house-oversight-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.ncleg.gov\/houseoversight\/2025\/12\/chapel-hill-carrboro-city-schools-to-appear-before-house-oversight-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools to Appear Before House Oversight Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.ncleg.gov\/houseoversight\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/12\/Griffin-Trice-NSJ.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2025-12-08T15:22:58+00:00\">December 8, 2025<\/time><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The House Select Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold a hearing December 10 at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee will hear testimony from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) Board of Education Chair George Griffin and Superintendent Rodney Trice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CHCCS came under scrutiny in October when a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1981425512032456828\">clip<\/a> surfaced online of Griffin bragging that CHCCS was openly defying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Sessions\/2023\/Bills\/Senate\/PDF\/S49v5.pdf\">SB49, The Parents\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a>. The bill became law in August 2023 when the General Assembly overrode Gov. Roy Cooper\u2019s veto. The school board voted unanimously to refuse to develop policies that would notify parents when the school changed a student\u2019s name or gender and keep gender identity, sexual activity, and sexuality out of the curriculum for children from kindergarten through fourth grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>School board Chairman George Griffin in a video clip called it \u201cludicrous\u201d to \u201cwordsmith policies that legitimized discrimination.\u201d Griffin added that CHCCS was \u201cthe only school district in North Carolina of 115 school districts that stood up to the General Assembly and said, \u2018We\u2019re not doing this.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the strong language on video, Griffin\u2019s written testimony states, \u201cTo my knowledge, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools has always been, and continues to be, in compliance with the law-including the Parents Bill of Rights.\u201d &nbsp;Superintendent Trice similarly states, \u201cTo my knowledge, the District has always complied with this law.\u201d Other documents provided by the district, suggest some there may be some wordsmithing involved in reaching this conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both written testimonies also tout the district\u2019s academic performance and commitment to non-discrimination. Again, actions speak louder than words as black and Hispanic students perform near the same level as their peers across the state, reaching career and college ready status on end-of-year testing at less than half the rate of white students in the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSchool systems funded by taxpayer dollars cannot run amok and make their own rules.
